Oral Hygiene in New York City
Regular dental check-ups are very necessary, because we believe it is the best policy to treat problems as they arise, rather than allow them to progress to such a point that treatment is unavoidable or even doubtful. Prevention is better than cure! A part of great oral health and periodontal (gum) care is good oral hygiene, which is provided by the fantastic team of oral hygienists at our New York City practice.
In addition to the thorough professional cleanings performed by our excellent team of oral hygienists, we also teach our patients how to properly take care of their teeth in between check-ups. This involves more than just twice daily brushing, but also the correct brushing and flossing techniques. We are also happy to recommend dental hygiene products and even offer samples for you to try out at home.
The dentists and oral hygienists at our general dentistry practice in New York City will also make suggestions for preventative measures, such as dental sealants if you have particularly deep cusps (crevasses) in your molars. We can custom make night guards for patients whose teeth show evidence of grinding (Bruxism) and jaw-clenching, which may lead to Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMD).
If we diagnose gum problems, such as gingivitis or more severe gum disease, our dentist may recommend a root scaling or planning procedure to New York patients. These measures can be instrumental in preventing bone loss and in helping you not only to keep your natural teeth, but to keep them looking beautiful and healthy.
Oral Cancer Screenings at Our Dentists in New York
Oral cancer screenings are incredibly important to do at least once every two years or once every year if you use tobacco and/or have a history of cancer. During an oral cancer screening, one of the passionate dentists at our New York practice will inspect your oral tissues (tongue, inner cheeks, palate and gums), as well as your throat and neck for any anomalous growths, lumps, sores or colored patches.
Screening the mouth for early changes in the oral tissue can help detect cancer at a stage when it can be more successfully treated. One of the biggest risk factors for oral cancer is tobacco-use, especially when combined with heavy drinking (30 or more alcoholic beverages per week). In fact, it is thought to be the most likely trigger in about 75 percent of oral cancers diagnosed in America. Other lifestyle and environmental factors, such as poor oral health, untreated gum disease and your genetic heritage, may also increase your risk of oral cancer.
Gum Disease Treatment: Scaling & Root Planing
Root planing and scaling are often necessary in the treatment of advanced gum disease. They are non-surgical procedures in which a periodontist (gum specialist) uses specialized instruments to remove deposits of plaque and tartar from beneath the gum line. The root surfaces are thoroughly cleaned and then polished so that the gums have a much better chance of healing and of reattaching themselves to the roots. Eliminating calculus from beneath the gum line is an essential step in the treatment of gum disease and can alleviate the symptoms of inflammation, swelling and a receded gum line.
At Glassman Dental Care’s general dentistry practice in NYC, you can rest assured that, no matter how minor the treatment you may require – from a straightforward cleaning to gum disease treatment – you will be handled with the same precision and careful attention to detail as we would a complex task.
